but I guess you would need to clone the drives before hand as first step. Cloning will sure your data are consistent.

Yes the HotSpot implementation of DietPi is not that flexible. For installation, it require an Ethernet (eth0) as well as WiFi (wlan0) interface and of course an internet connection to be able to download packages needed.

As an alternative, RaspAP should be working as well.

You could install SAMBA and a WebServer on your RPi. Using SAMBA, you could mount a share on your Windows PC and store the picture directly on the RPi.

still recommended way is to clone your drive. Once done, we could check on how to mount the drive correctly.

Well you could clone your drive using a tool like Gparted or you simply mount both drives using drive manager and copy all files using cp -p /old/loaction/* /new/location/
