Transferring dietpi to new/different hardware?

Thinking about going from Odroid N2 to x86 hardware to have some more robust power driving the server.

I now have dietpi setup as I want it and don’t really want to do it all over again.

Some questions:

Is it possible to do this preserving the current setup?
Is there any reason to not use a VM? I am leaning towards ubuntu and have dietpi running in a vm so that the
machine can also be used for other things.

Hi,

there is no real way to change from one architecture to another. Simply all software packages are compiled for different platforms. That’s why you are not able to simple backup/restore the system. Only way is to manually save your configs and copy them over.

You can use a VM as well, this is totally fine.

HI,
I tried it yesterday.
So it didn’t work I have this message :

Here’s what I did:

I made a backup of dietpi on my old x86 computer (which we’ll call (1)) on an external hard drive
I installed dietpi on a new X86 computer (called (2))
I did the dietpi updates on (2) to be at the same level
I restored the backup of (1) to (2) using the dietpi-backup utility

And then he tells me that normal.mod is not available.

Can I manually transfer this file from (1) to (2) by plugging the hard drives into a windows pc? Or is there another solution?

I try a second time to use diet-backup to restore a dietpi installation to an other one (x86 to x86 machine).

After reboot the new dietpi blocked at launch (grub).

When I try to restore my backup I have this message :

Yes and No !

The system works but all my softwares don’t work (nextcloud, rtorrent, freshrss, …).

Here’s that I have done to transfer :

Install dietpi on my new pc
Install all the software I used on my old PC on the new one
Restore the back from my old PC on the new PC
After this step GRUB is broken
I repair it with boot-repair liveCd (on a usb stick)
Grub is repair
Dietpi launch
But nothing work

I think Nginx have a problem,
I do all my best to try to transfer my dietpi, I don’t have enough skills to continue.

You don’t need to install the software beforehand, just flahlsu Dietpi, run the first boot setup and then restore the backup.

But for some reason it looks like PHP is not working anymore.

You can also try to create an image from the working system and flash it to the new drive:

So it looks like x86 to x86 has issues, can i move my microSD card from a r Pi 3A+ to a new r Pi zero 2 and have it work? The only difference between the two seems to be no 5gHz wireless on the latter. Thanks.

Long answer: RPI family is a complete different platform and you are able to switch between them
