Pihole weirdness?

i keep getting bitdefender update requests in pihole but i dont have it installed on any machine and im getting constant dns requests. from us.nimbus.bitdefender.net i asked bit defender customer service and they are almost useless. they keep thinking dietpi has bitdefender on it. is there something that would be falsely showing it as bit defender? im tired from trying to figure this out. ive been doing nothing but time wasting

using the most current version of dietpi

DietPi has nothing to do with Bitdefinder. We do not provide an antivirus solution. A new DietPi system is almost empty, as we want to run as few services as possible. Normally, you can see the client connected to the DNS request in PiHole. Is that the case for you?

yes thats what i thought and thats how it is for me. i figured it would be useless asking them for anything..nothing like the feeling of everything being futile. you guys are always on point.

EDIT: wait client? you mean the specific device making the request? no actually all my requests are one ip the router. so i cant really tell what device..

In the pihole DNS settings you can use conditional forwarding to show the individual client IP fpr the requests instead of the top client (router) they are connected to. You probably need to activate “experts settings” in the top right corner of the page. There is also a example config in the explanatory text.
Otherwise it’s pretty hard to figure out what is going on, especially if you have a lot of clients conneced.

or change the DHCP settings and assign PiHole as DNS server directly. This way you can see all client request

i dont see expert settings anywhere in the top right corner.

i have my pihole assigned as dns for my router already.

Best to adjust your DHCP server settings. This way your clients will connect to PiHole directly. This will allow client based AdBlock If needed.

how do i adjust them? the software for this router is making me want to toss it in a poo pile..the stupid settings are in a small slide window instead of the full page so you can only see a small amount of it..like 10 to 20% of the settings.. i dont get how this was allowed to be put into a router..

If not activated the button is green and shows “basic”

You would need to search for DHCP settings in your router. This depends on your device and to give an advice from our end.

o so now i tell it the ip of my router?

on the bottom are the settings for the conditional forwarding, there is a example setting:

A valid config line could look like true,192.168.0.0/24,192.168.0.1,fritz.box

<enabled>,<ip-address>[/<prefix-len>],<server>[#<port>][,<domain>]

So for me it looks like true,192.168.178.0/24,192.168.178.1#53,fritz.box because my network is 192.168.178.0 and the router has the ip 192.168.178.1. DNS is running on port 53, so if you didn’t change it you can also use #53 or ommit it, since it’s the default value. And at the end ist the host name / domain of your router.

hmm this looks complicated. so the first ip is for the range? ugh i dont feel like doing this an screwing it up hehe.

true,192.168.1.0/24,192.168.1.1#53,fritz.box

EDIT: wait the end is what? fritz.box is your hostname/domain? sorry you have to be specific i dont know what any of this is

i dont know what my hostname/domain is how do i figure that out?

I don’t think you are using AVM FritzBox router, aren’t you?

Look in the settings or the manual of your router, it should be specified some where.
You can also use n_slookup 192.168.1.1 (remove the underscore, some filter is blocking me to post the combination of letters n and s)

Or simply adjust the DHCP server settings

Yes, probably easier, if you do not need to let the router handle DHCP

so by adjust you mean turn off dhcp on my router and turn it on in the pihole?
