I am at my wits end, and yes I am quite the newbie. I have been trying to install Dietpi on and off for six months now on a Pi Zero WH. I have never been able to SSH into the Zero for installing Dietpi. I have followed many different videos and tutorials about how to do a headless install but cannot connect. I know the Pi has wifi because I can use Raspian to do a Headless install.
I do have a Ethernet Hat for the Pi Zero and I cannot even use a keyboard to install it. I am beyond frustrated and do not know what do do. All the vids I have watched say how easy it is so install, just not for me. LOL
I modify diepi.txt and dietpi-wifi.txt as all the tutorials have said.
Does the fact my Router is setup with WWPA2 Personal Security settings? That is the only difference I can see.
Hope someone can help.
Mike
I guess you have a wrong idea of dietpi. It’s like
I assume you mean by this, that you flashed the DietPi image to an SD card and booted from there, or did you really installed another OS and then tried to install DietPi over it?
If you think you made all these steps correct, then we need more info. Esp. at which step do you got stuck and what is the output of your SSH client?
Also what you have changed in dietpi.txt and dietpi-wifi.txt and how your network config looks like, how you try to make a connectin etc.
Well I have:
Downloaded the latest Dietpi OS (several times)
Flashed with Etcher
Changed Dietpi.txt and Dietpi-wifi.txt just as all the videos say (I have followed that you mentioned video many times)
Put the card into the pi Zero and that’s ad far as I get. I do not get "DietPi in my router or scanning the network with angryIP.
Well you are not able to login as long via SSH as WiFi is not working. That’s something to be fixed first.
Did your router offer 2.4Ghz or 5GHz WiFi? Did you tried to change WiFi channel to a lower one like 1 or 6 on 2.4GHz? Is there an access point in between or directly connected to the router? Did you use a complex password with some special characters? Did you tried a simple password? Are you able to see failed connection WiFi attempts on the router? Did you like to share your dietpi-wifi.txt ? (with anonymized password)
Sorry it took me so long to respond I will try to answer you questions.
Yes I have 2.5 and 5 GHZ Wifi. I only use 2.4 on the Pi
2.My wifi channel is 2, I tried changing today with no affect
3.I do have a Wifi repeater bit that is on the other side of the house and the Pi is 3 foot from the router.
4.There is no special characters in my Password just letters and numbers
5.No I do not see any failed attempts in my Router, I do not think it lists it.
I hope this info helps/ As I stated before I can get Raspian to work fine but when it comes to DietPi I have never got it to connect. I would rather be using Dietpi as it is smaller and has a great reputation. Thanks for anything you can do.
BTW, I have an Ethernet Hat on my Pi Zero. When connecting that it does not recognize a keyboard or mouse on a USB hub. I do not kn ow if you need that info but maybe.
TIA
Mike
Are you able to get e network connection using the Ethernet Hat? It would not necessarily needed to have mouse and keyboard connected as you could use SSH afterwards. This probably allow us to see what’s going on with the WiFi connection.
Sadly, no luck on the Ethernet and SHH. I let it run for 20 minutes and nothing showed up on my Router’s attached devices. I tried IPCONFIG and nothing. I tried Ping for dietpi.local and raspberry.local same thing. Ugh LOL
Rpi Zero is used quite often. Theoretically it should be working. There seems to be some local conditions influencing https://dietpi.com/survey/#device
After that I cannot proceed. I cannot hit enter either by ethernet or ssh. The screen just stays at ‘hit enter’ no matter how many time I do a clean install. Which feels like 40 or 50 times I have burnt a new install.
What I meant was wired or wifi. Sorry, I guess I was confused. Dietpi gets to the point where it says hit enter and nothing else. I assume any wifi stuff being done happens before I get to that point. But most of the time I wait 10 or 15 minutes to see if I see a connection to my router and nothing, either under the 2.4 ghz connection or ethernet.
But when Raspian loads I can get right in and do what I need to do. That is the weird part to me. I can connect via Raspain but, Dietpi never has connected.
I tried again with just the keyboard, ethernet and the hdmi. I just get to the point where it says ‘hit enter’ anf nothing more happens. I tried powering from the main power usb and the second micro usb used for otg. Same outcome.
can you do a picture of the screen where you stuck. I mean the last output your see before “nothing”. At the moment I’m not sure on the point where your systems stop. Usually as one of the first point, the system will check network connection. Usually of this is not the case, it will show an error message.
