Backup whole dietpi OS?

Hi

I have dietpi running on a homeserver (nuc). I’m aware there’s DietPi-Backup, though not clear how it differs from backing up the whole OS, for example as a snapshot of some kind or instead using as a VM in Proxmox (I’m not familiar with snapper or proxmox).

If I had a disc disaster where I’d need reinstall whole system, what are the recommended solutions? Or is DietPi-Backup fine in any disaster scenario?

Thanks for any advice

It is best to make the backup on an external disk. This allows the entire system to be restored automatically (must be activated in dietpi.txt) when you perform a new installation.

I am using dietpi-backup intensively on an NFS mounted drive (different backup system). And - it saved my *ss many times!

→ Restoring is so easy: Just install a dietpi base system, login, mount your backup device, start dietpi-backup, set the backup location and execute a restore. Then reboot and all is fine.

Hint: Test this with a test system to learn these steps once.

See also our docs and blog, maybe this gives a bit more insights:

THX. Is there somewhere some information how to do that?

inside dietpi.txt we have some information
