Did you install xfce via dietpi-software?

dietpi-software install 25

Maybe our related blog posts can give some more hints: X11 – DietPi Blog

Yes, I installed Xfce via dietpi-software menu.

Thanks for the link, I installed GNOME and it works.

But when I try to install a VNC server now, it asks me which desktop to install?

Yeah because DietPi does not offer GNOME, so you installed it on your own and the script can not detect it.

Your initial problem is also maybe bound to this:
https://dietpi.com/forum/t/hyper-v-autostart-dekstop-gui-not-working/20053/2

Can you share your logfile

cat /var/log/Xorg.o.log

,

Xorg.0.log (54.3 KB)

The futro S920 has a Display Port and a DVI interface. Which one do you use?
Maybe the startx command try to open to the one port without a monitor connected (I am not familiar with X11)?

As stated in the initial post:

I guess I will just install Ubuntu 24.04 on that thing. I will only control it via RDP and that always worked without any issues on Ubuntu.

DietPi is offering xRDP. Did you tried that one?

Yep, does not work at all. It asks for credentials, then the window is closed. Nothing else happens.

You mean RDP window is closing? Can you share a picture of the last window shown?

I have now reinstalled DietPi completely, so I am on a fresh installation now.

What would be the correct way to get a working desktop and being able to control the session I see on my TV from another device? Xfce from dietpi-software did not work as per my initial post.

Installed Xfce again. It does not throw an error on startxfce4, instead the screen just turns black, then No Signal. What now?

I have no issues to setup VNC using Xfce

left hand side is a VM running inside VBox
right hand side is the VNC session

Maybe it is related to your ThinClient? Did you try plain Debian already? Does this works?

Or did you try using dietpi-autostart option number 2??

I tried a few live systems and all of them were able to boot to the desktop without any issues.

Current AutoStart Option: 7

root@pc-tv:~# xrandr --query
Can't open display

this would require a xsession if I’m not mistaken

At least I can start it from a running desktop

But not from command line

So what can I do now to start Xfce?

Is here a problem maybe?

Tried with LXQt desktop. Same thing. startx → Blank Screen → No Signal.

Just tested Kodi, works without any issues. I just type kodi into the terminal and it starts up in full screen on my TV. So why are all the desktops broken

Ok, I finally gave up. Installed Ubuntu 24.04. Works out-of-the-box.
