WiFi HotSpot - hostapd not starting - [X] Solved

I followed the above mentioned blogpost. It’s working fine when using only the onboard wifi.
It’s not working (hostapd is not starting) when using either a TP-LINK TL-WN823N or an D-Link DWA-131 which are supposed to be tested & working OK.

Yes - I have searched the existing open and closed issues

    installed freshly

  • Can this issue be replicated on a fresh installation of DietPi?
    yes

Steps to reproduce
With no USB WLAN Adapter all is fine.
Inserting a USB WLAN Adapter hostapd is not starting anymore

An idea would be to first test only the WiFi Hotspot without the Ad Blocker to reduce the complexity.

Removed 126 & 182.

Could you test the WiFi stick in a DietPi base installation, i.e. whether it can connect to your WiFi router (instead of using a LAN cabling)?
I.e., that could prove whether the system handles the WiFi stick (at least in a WiFi client mode).

This you can test with dietpi-config and then test the WiFi network option.
I propose to do small steps from a running system towards your target solution.

We could also look via ip a whether this gives some more hints.

Are you sure your external adapter supports AP mode?

I think so because both of my adapters are mentioned here:

to double check, can you run following

iw list

It might generate a huge list. Search for Supported interface modes:. If AP does not appear in the list, save yourself some time and find another adapter.

Another point, you are running RPI device and it might be needed to update your SBC to new RPI kernel structure. Probably current kernel does not support AP mode on your external adapter. Personally, I had such experience in past.

BTW: update your SBC to new RPI kernel structure
How to achieve this … ?

I tested with the D-LINK as well. No AP mentioned in iw list as well. BUT the documentation says:

D-Link’s SoftAP feature allows the DWA-131 to act as an access point, allowing you to share your Internet connection wirelessly with other devices, or extend the coverage of an existing network.

So maybe the mysterious new kernel structure is the solution …

yep missing AP feature.

To switch to new RPI kernel structure, have a look to following GitHub post. Image | Raspberry Pi 5: Testing and firmware migration script · Issue #6676 · MichaIng/DietPi · GitHub
