Which SBC would suit me best?

I have been running owncloud/nextcloud for a few years.

I have a Raspberry Pi 2b as a backend database server with two USB hard drives and a newly deceased Rock64 with a USB hard drive as the webserver/front end.

It is time to refresh but I am only really using these devices as a NAS and I think a Raspberry Pi 5 is overkill.

My overriding consideration is that I want to reliably boot from USB because there are databases which mean a lot of writing and we all know what that does to an SD Card.

I’m sure there are many opinions but I am currently leaning to go for Raspberry Pi 4 as I believe they will boot from USB via a config setting.

Thoughts?

RPi4 is able to boot from USB without issue. But you might look for other device like NanoPi with eMMC module. Usually they consume less power compared to RPi. Or you check for SBC who offer NVMe support.
