have you considered tailscale as a new software ?
Not only tailscale but also headscale as a server would be interesting.
I know that there is still a bit of a problem, but it would be a real alternative to the Wireguard installation.

but maybe one more question:
with some enquiries the 1st ping is extremely high up to the error
I have not found anything yet to keep the server on “keep alive”.
Is there already something ?

nobody from our side was looking into tailscale until now. I recommend to contact tailscale developer on their GitHub if you are facing issues.
