tab key doesn't auto-complete

I know this is going to be something simple but when I launch LXTerminal and try to use tab key to autocomplete it doesn’t work - it just actually tabs

And the up arrow key doesn’t give me my previous command

Could someone point to what I need to do to sort this out please?
(I’m VNC ing in just in case that makes any diff)
