New topic from another post where on reboot it hangs, doesn’t do anything until power is removed and added. The fresh install had the same problems, all on RPi 3B with USB SSD. And also a bootloader from Raspi imager.
I have the same problem with a RPI4 and SSD under DietPi bookworm and went back to the DietPi bullseye release. There I don’t have the problem with the reboot.
Under raspian bookworm with SSD I have strangely no problems with the reboot but I would like to stay with DietPi and use DietPi bullseye for now.
is there much of a difference between bookworm and bullseye besides the obvious lack of some features, and where do i even get the previous version?

There is no difference from DietPi point of view. The underlying Debian is the main difference.
yes, the last time I used an SD card flashed with Dietpi and Bookworm version, it did reboot. It seems to be an issue only for booting off the SSD. If the fix to the problem is too complex or long, I might as well move to Buster. Is there any efficient way of backing up my files to my PC the moving them back to the fresh drive?
how are external drives powered? just via RPI or are they using own external PSU?
It’s a Kingston 120GB A400 2.5" SSD, it’s powered by a USB case I brought ages ago, just clips in and has this weird two combined port USB micro to a USB-A. Bare in mind long time ago it worked perfectly, also the PI is overclocked and has access to the correct voltage so I doubt it’s a problem with the power supply.

In general, independent from this issue, we highly recommend to use external PSU for USB drives on RPI4, because RPi4 is not designed to power larger USB devices.
For testing I used
- RPi4B 8GB
- latest DietPi Bookworm image (64bit)
- WD Red HDD 3TB
- USB3 to SATA adaptor incl own PSU
- direct boot from HDD, no SD card
And I’m not able to replicate the behaviour. For me, RPI4 is rebooting from HDD all the time without issues.
Means there is no general issue rebooting RPI4 from HDD on Debian Bookworm.
Could it be that the rpi3b has a different behavior? Because I used the external SSD for a solid 5-6 months before I ran the upgrade, it was doing the job well of hosting a terraria server and a discord bot, until it didnt
For easier debuggin, you can enable permanent system logs:
dietpi-software uninstall 103
mkdir /var/log/journal
poweroff
A poweroff
is also interesting, i.e. to know whether really the shutdown sequence hangs, do that the board never powers down, or really bootup after warm reboot.
After reboot, permanent logging is on. So the you can perform a reboot
, and when it hangs, do a power cycle, and after next bootup:
journalctl
This will then contain logs from the previous boot session(s) as well.
I wonder whether the USB drive is detected too slow. There is a way to delay boot at two stages for such cases, let me check back the docs.

could be added to /boot/config.txt
, in case it is really bootup which hangs, instead of shutdown. I have no idea why it would take longer on reboot than on cold boot, but who knows.
The other option should be applied already: /boot/cmdline.txt
should contain rootwait
, which instructs the kernel to wait (indefinitely) for the root device to become available.

And it wants me to format the partitions on the SSD, so I can’t transfer it back, just an FYI. Furthermore, might be related but when I power cycle, it doesn’t boot the first time but, when I power cycle again it boots.

Was that in attempt to solve the issue? Otherwise it sounds pretty much like a good reason for the issue. I would try to manually move back the root filesystem to the USB drive. Try this:
EDIT: Wait, actually it should be easily possible via dietpi-drive_manager
. When you select /dev/sda2
and “Transfer RootFS” there, it asks you to format only the partition, not the whole drive, isn’t it? Otherwise, you could do it manually:
dietpi-services stop
mount -o remount,ro /
The second command should mount the rootfs read-only. If this fails, a swap file might be the reason, or some other services:
swapoff -a
mount -o remount,ro /
Once it worked, you should be able to do something like this, to copy the files back. But please assure that the device names are really correct, and that the old root filesystem does not contain anything required anymore. Check the names e.g. via lsblk
mkdir /mnt/sd_rootfs /mnt/usb_rootfs
mount /dev/mmcblk0p2 /mnt/sd_rootfs
mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/usb_rootfs
cp -a rsync -aHv --delete /mnt/sd_rootfs/ /mnt/usb_rootfs/
Then you need to adjust the UUID entries:
