Pi 5 and touch display 2 not working together

Hello everyone, I am pretty new to Linux/dietpi. I juse bought myself a pi 5 and touch display 2 for a digital dash project. When I load up dietpi connected to my display I see the boot up lines appear but as soon as the actual os loads the screen goes black (the backlight stays on).

I feel like I have tried everything suggested in previous forum posts plus some. I have tried adding the following lines to the config file:

dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dsi-ili9881-7inch,noaudio,rotation=270
display_auto_detect=1
disable_fw_kms_setup=1

I have also tried commenting out anything that might favor hdmi inputs over the screen, and I even tried deleting the video=HDMI line in the cmdline. I even tried to change the dtoverlay to the fkms version. None of this has made a bit of difference, I’m hoping its something stupid that I’m missing because I’m new to all this. TIA

Hmm the waveshare wiki says you need both lines

dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d 
#For DSI1 usage 
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-dsi-ili9881-7inch

I tried this, it doesn’t work unfortunately. Looks as if maybe my X11 isnt loading on the screen properly based off some of the error messages I get?

Hi, I can see that they are X11 messages if I look quickly enough, but they load and then go away instantly on the display and then only the backlight is left on. Unfortunately hard to show the exact error messages if I cant even see them.

There should be a log file at /var/log/Xorg.0.log

I’m thinking this might be part of my issues? I’m not quite sure what to do with this info? If any of yall have any idea of what I could do to solve these issues I would appreciate it.

Seems like this is only about the touch capability, but not about the display functionality.

Can you post the log as text?
