Not able to login to Rpi4B+ after installing DietPi and no output from HDMI

Hi all,

I used the official Rpi Bookworm OS and I can login to Rpi by connecting the HDMI to monitor and work. Also can connnect via SSH. Just wanted to try DietPi after reading. So installed the img and connected the SSD. Now if I try to connect the HDMI to monitor, it shows no signal.

So, installed Ubuntu Desktop and tried connecting to monitor and voila! it works. So looks like DietPi only is not having video output or is not booting properly?

Can someone help me out? I’m using 4B+ 4GB and Balena Etcher to write images. Downloaded image from dietpi.com only. File name : DietPi_RPi-ARMv8-Bookworm.img

pls try to connect via SSH and check display settings within dietpi-config

Actually, I have a demo RPi4B booting from SD card into a desktop without issues.

Did you try to boot from SD card or SSD directly?

Trying to boot from SSD. As I mentioned, I installed Ubuntu for testing and it works in both HDMI as well as SSH. But DietPi is not working in both monitor and SSH. Nothing is working.

just did another test. Download latest imaged and used Rufus to flash the image to a simple USB pen stick. My RPi4B is booting fine from USB, HDMI is working and the device is reachable on SSH.

I’m not able to replicate this

Does using SSD impacts the flow in DietPi? I am running the Rpios in SSD for last 6 months without any issues. Only with DietPi I’m facing such issues. Even tried with Ubuntu now and it boots without any issues.

How does the SSD has been connected. Usually this is working. We have a lot of users using SSD.

Connected the SSD through USB.

When you try to boot from a SSD, does the device display something like a flashing LED code?

And for testing purposes, can you try booting from a SD card and/or USB stick if available. Just to rule out a few issues. Unfortunately, I don’t have a SSD available in my lab.

I boot from SSD with a powered USB-SATA-adapter. With unpowered adapters I always ran into issues.
Can you also assure that you picked the right image for your device?

Yes, I picked the right one. As I mentioned above, I tried other images like LibreELEC, Ubuntu and those work just fine with the same SSD. Only with DietPi I’m having this issues. Weird!

Did you tried booting of a USB pen stick or any other USB drive? How about using Rufus instead of BalenaEtcher?

Ok I got a simple passive NVMe enclosure from Amazon today. I installed a NVMe and used Rufus on my Windows PC to flash the DietPi image. Then connected the case to the RPi4B via USB port and the system started immediately.

Tried with USB Stick and it still doesn’t boot up. I’m all out of options so planned to go with Ubuntu Server for my Pi4 and it worked just fine in the very same SSD! I used SATA SSD with a enclosure and never faced such issues before.

Tried Rufus as well but still no luck!

Thanks all for your help guys.

Something that seems to be dedicated to your system as we have many users booting their system from USB.

Can you boot from SD card? If yes, can you verify USB boot has been enabled correctly?
