No soundcards found

Hi there. I’m using a raspberry Pi 3b with DietPi, primarily it has been used for AdGuard Home. No I wanted to add Darkice / Icecast to the DietPi in order to connect my turntable via USB to stream to my SONOS.

However, “arecord -l” always states “no sound cards found”.
In the “dmesg log” is can see “usbcore: registered new interface driver snd-usb-audio”.

I went to the dietpi-config → Audio Options and selected “CODEC USB AUDIO” as the sound card, but no change.
Any ideas how I get it to work?

@MichaIng can you have a look pls

Adding to this: I have tried directly with the Audio-Technica 120 turntable, which has built-in USB, and also with an external audio interface. Pretty sure the issue is on the Pi-side… all tutorials for getting it to work never mention any possible issue in this step. It‘s more like „type arecord -l and note down the device number“. Seems like I’m the first person where that step does not work. :grinning:
One additional issue: as I also need to edit the darkice.cfg I did so already and tried running darkice. However it quits and says something like „no section ‚general‘ found in config file“ but that is indeed there. It‘s probably the next issue I need help with. If I can’t get it to work I will have to switch back to Raspbian (no issue there).

Please help :frowning:

Be patient. We are an open source project where people work on their free spare time. Actually we have Christmas and New years period where people are out, on vacation and not sitting next to their computer.

Sorry  Wasn’t trying to rush anyone. I’m just sad

Hmm, since dietpi-config shows the USB DAC, I guess aplay -l lists it as well?

So the playback device was found, but not the capture/recording device, despite there is a microphone/headset 3.5mm jack with a microphone/headset or other/digital audio input jack?

The vendor does not provide instructions and/or a driver for Linux to get the capture device up? Does the kernel probably report related errors, e.g. tha some firmware is missing?

dmesg -l 0,1,2,3

Correct, diet-config SHOWS USB DAC, but in fact I have selected hw:0,0: CODEC USB AUDIO. My understanding here was, that it in fact recognises it, that’s why it says hw0:0. play -lshows aplay: device_list:274: no soundcards found....
The Pi itself has a headphone jack but is is not used. The device (turntable / audio interface) is connected via USB. There is no driver from the vendor.
The command you posted does not bring up anything. If I just use dmesg I get the following:

Can you repeat the kernel log with the options I added:

dmesg -l 0,1,2,3

Without colors, it is otherwise hard to extract errors among the full kernel logs.

Hmm, if aplay -l does not list any sound card now, then dietpi-config does not anymore either, right? So it was there at first, and vanished now. I see you have some more USB devices attached, one storage device, if I see it correctly? If this is a 2.5" SSD or HDD; how is it powered?

The idea I have is that all USB devices together draw more then 1.2A/6W, at least temporarily, which is more than the RPi 1-4 USB ports can give (combined). So probably when one device draws more power temporarily, another one gets disconnected due to voltage drop, which could the USB DAC. In case of a 2.5" drive, an external PSU is quite mandatory for stable operation on RPi. If it is not among them, please still try to disconnect all other USB devices, reboot, and check again whether aplay -l and arecord -l do now list the sound card.

I just rebooted, just to be safe. The kernel log dmesg -l 0,1,2,3 does not output anything:

dietpi@DietPi:~$ dmesg -l 0,1,2,3
dietpi@DietPi:~$

Like, nothing happens at all. aplay -l and arecord -l still show “no sound card found”. dietpi-config → Audio Options shows (under auto detection, at the bottom):

usb-dac : USB Audio DAC (any)
hw:0,0 : CODEC USB Audio

The selected one (I think by me) is hw:0,0-plug.
There is no other USB device connected to the Pi. One USB device (the turntable / audio interface), one Ethernet cable, one power chord. That’s it.

Okay very strange indeed. dietpi-config in fact auto-detects cards from /proc/asound/card. But I was sure that this is the exact same source where aplay/arecord are getting them from, respectively that if a sound card exists below /proc/asound/card, the two commands implicitly list them, as both are coming from the same ALSA source packages.

Do you have another Linux system where you can test this card? USB DACs usually just work with the default Linux driver, at least with basic/generic features. Probably this one is somehow different. But a test on another Linux system could verify it. The idea to check whether the vendor provides some Linux instructions or driver stands.

I do have another system, or another SD card that I can use on the exact same Pi 3B. I did install Raspberry Pi OS (64 Bit, Lite) to test via the official Raspberry Pi Imager.
After rebooting with this OS, plugin in the turntable via USB again, and typing
arecord -l I get this as an output:

**** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices ****
card 1: CODEC [USB AUDIO CODEC], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Works out of the box… So… How do we fix this now  I want to keep using DietPi…

just to ensure, you updated RPi OS to same latest version, like kernel aso, as we use on DietPi?

I installed RPi OS via the Installer, but did not do any updates afterwards.

try to update all packages to latest version. Maybe some kernel package has an influence?

Will try later today! Even though I’m quite happy that it is running now :joy:

No need to rush, there is still plenty of time next year

Quick question  how do I update all packages via SSH?

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

And that’s it? Sorry, haven’t used Linux in quite some time…

Well, just as if you were connected locally  there is no SSH way :stuck_out_tongue:
but yes, apt update && apt upgrade would do the update for all apt managed packages. Keep in mind, there are some software titles who have own individual update feature (like NextCloud) or require a reinstall (like Vaultwarden).

Hi guys, I never responded again. It worked well since I installed Raspian and I don’t want the hassle again. It would actually help A LOT if it worked on DietPi, because otherwise I need another Pi, but “never change a running system”.
