can sbd confirm, that mc does not connect to ftp or sftp?
Probably a question to be ask towards MC developer http://midnight-commander.org/
MC can connect to FTP and SFTP, I just tested this on my home servers
FTP and SFTP options in right panel menu
Connected to my home file server
