I’ve been attempting to find LightDM on DietPi to manage direct physical access to the Dietpi via desktop/GUI OS, but it seems to be missing from the dietpi-software selection. This is surprising, as I recall it being available in earlier versions of DietPi.
From my understanding, when Xorg (the display server) is installed, it typically requires a display manager like LightDM for tasks such as login, session management, and starting/accessing the desktop environment (e.g., Xfce, LXDE).
I’ve observed that with remote access, specifically when using the XRDP server, Xorg (when selected as the XRDP session) seems to be managed via XRDP. This isn’t a standard feature of XRDP, but it effectively starts Xorg and enables desktop access (e.g., Xfce, LXDE) remotely. When XRDP is closed, Xorg and the desktop environment cease running, making them inaccessible via local/physical means (implying independence from local login).
What I’ve discovered is that for local (physical/direct) access only, such as to Xfce/XLDE and Xorg, the only way to “install” LightDM is via the DietPi AutoStart options (16).
Does anyone know if this is how DietPi manages/installs/allows (via LightDM, KDM or SDDM, etc) local access a Desktop/GUI - if so how to install LightDM or any other such package via dietpi-software?
ps I know I can also install it manually, but the question relates to dietpi-software.
LightDM don’t have an own install option and it is not installed while selecting DietPi AutoStart options (16). It is pulled automatically during install as dependency. I just checked LXDE and I see the package pulled.
