Excuse my ignorance on this matter, but I am curious why a single ISO for each chip architecture doesn’t exist and instead there are multiple images for different devices?
I was strongly considering using DietPi for my NAS system, but ultimately went with OpenMediaVault because of the no guarantee to work script for non-tested images.
Also, are there plans for this in the future? Would be great to confidently slap DietPi on any hardware and call it a day.
I was planning to install DietPi on this device, but when I checked the downloads section on the DietPi website, I noticed that there isn’t a pre-made image available for it. Unlike many SBCs that have dedicated DietPi images, this device requires you to first install standard Debian and then run a script to convert it into DietPi.
Why doesn’t DietPi offer a universal ISO or installer that works across all systems, similar to how other Linux distributions do? Why are the available images focused on specific SBC models, while other devices need this extra conversion step?
Well, usually SBCs are ARM-based, while the NAS you are looking for is an Intel X86. There is a big difference between these chip architectures, and you can’t mix or compare them.
And as for the large number of SBC images, each SBC (family) has its own kernel, boot or unboot, and other required drivers/settings. I doubt you will find a single image that can boot on different SBCs.
Perhaps you can show off one Linux distribution that has a single generic image that can boot on various ARM based SBC and X86 systems.
Anyway there a different images available for x86. You could try one of these.
Perhaps the words in my post title are not clear enough and my last comment further confused you.
I’m asking why is there not a single ISO for amd64 regardless of hardware, and another for aarch64 that can work on various devices, similar to how your average Linux distro is offered.
This makes sense but then why for amd64 is there not a pre-made image file that can work on most devices similar to other linux distros? This would be really nice to have available.
