How to disable ALL automated search for updates, report uploads, etc, on a DietPi with critically restricted monthly bandwidth M2M plan?

Hello everyone, what a great operating system you have created, I am amazed by its robustness and speed, I could hardly believe how fast it starts on my raspberry Pi zero W and how light it is in terms of resource usage. Truly a marvel. I am very grateful for the magnificent work.

I am developing tests to use this system in the automation of remote registration and hourly reporting of the level of the drinking water tank of a remote community in the deep south of Chile, for this I am using a GPRS modem with a VERY RESTRICTED M2M plan of 8MB per month (the only one that fit the non-existent budget of this “project”, well… it is rather a way to help a community with high levels of poverty and not a project itself, at least not a private one nor one funded by any state or non-governmental organization)

So far everything is going perfectly (while I work on the tests connected to my office wifi), except for one thing: at each start I see that the system manages to connect to the internet successfully and check if it is “up to date”. I didn’t know how to disable these checks. In fact, I started to wonder if, in addition to the update checks, there won’t be also times when the system will try to upload usage reports or someting similar in an automated way to a server of the DietPi project. In any of these cases (update checks or report uploads), once the equipment is deployed “in production” and using its restrictive M2M plan, I can run the risk of consuming the entire monthly plan for a single not controlled eventuality!

Therefore, I pose the following question: Is there a possibility of disabling ALL TRAFFIC both upload and download, other than ONLY the periodic (hourly) upload of the few bytes I require to record the level of the drinking water tank?

I reiterate my thanks for the tremendous work you have done with this system, and I send you my sincere greetings. I’m a bit old and my Linux is a bit rusty, but these tests are helping me to regain some mobility through the terminal, so I’ll do my best to try any help you can give me.

You can disable checks using dietpi.txt

There should nothing uploaded to our servers if you disable the survey function

Thanks Joulinar!! I didn’t know where to look for those. Now I’m all set. Thanks again and keep up the good work!
