Good WiFi 5 (802.11ac) USB adapter

Hey guys,

for testing and developing I need new WiFi 5 (802.11ac) adapters for Raspberry Pi and other SBCs. Does someone know good ones? I was checking some online shops but its hard to get reliable recommendations. For WiFi 4 some time ago this was pretty easy, but I need to test WiFi 5 explicitly, implement toggles for our WiFi and hotspot implementations, and of course benefit from the additional speed when testing other things on SBCs where plugging around Ethernet cables becomes complicated .

If someone can recommend a specific dongle or chip, this would be highly appreciated .

Did some digging…found this link

https://www.aidsquilt.org/best-wireless-adapter-for-raspberry-pi/

I personally have this one and it works on all my linux SBC’s fine (but it’s N)

And I stumbled to this one
https://www.amazon.com/Edimax-802-11ac-Dual-Band-Adjustable-EW-7822UAD/dp/B092M5NZ1H
This is the nano version

Might be dependent upon the chipset and driver support I suppose
There is a supported one directly on the pishop (based upon the RTL8811CU/RTL8821CU chipset)
https://www.pishop.us/product/raspberry-pi-dual-band-5ghz-2-4ghz-usb-wifi-adapter-with-antenna/

I wonder if building drivers for some of the major brands might be a good addon (would increase support for sure)

Many thanks.

WiFi 5/802.11ac is required, for WiFi 4/802.11n I have already long-term proven nano adapters.

Much preferred, actually required for practical reasons is a nano version without dedicated antenna. Distance to AP is not a problem, I mainly need to test WiFi 5/802.11ac on SBCs.

The EDUP nano adapter actually looks good on first glace, I didn’t find it as it doesn’t mention any of WiFi 5/Wi-Fi 5/802.11ac in the title, how to loose sells by not mentioning a major info (supported WiFi standard) at a major place…
Chip is RTL8811CU-CG, lets see whether this works OOTB on RPi and mainline Linux without needing to compile a driver first.

An alternative seems to be TP-Link Archer T2U Nano. Chip seems to be RTL8811AU.

Can you please update this thread MichaIng with what you found works OOTB with RPi4?

I cannot say since I don’t have an RPi 4. Here one that does not work : https://forums.raspberrypi.com/viewtopic.php?t=330500
