Steps to reproduce

  1. Yesterday, I updated the docker container “Uptime Kuma” from version 1 to version 2. During this migration process I lost the network connection to my dietpi. No ssh access was possible.
  2. … I’m not sure if it happens because of the docker container update but since yesterday the dietpi is not accessible via network from time to time. This off-time is for around 1-2 hours I guess. I do not check every minute, therefore I can not say something more accurate timing.
  3. But, after that the dietpi is connected again and I can see in my Grafana dashboard that the dietpi was working all the time. The connection is via LAN cable.

Extra details

  • …I would like to know where I can check for the issue?

check full system and kernel log for the time frame in question

dmesg
journalctl

Hi friends, the same thing is happening here too, with an RPi5. I even left the board’s status LEDs on to know if it was powered on. The difference is that all the services, including Portainer, Jellyfin, Docker, and Pi-hole, are unavailable, and there’s no SSH access. But Tailscale works, and here it’s configured as a subnet node.

Since I asked here the issue is not happen again. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

What I did: I removed Kodi (was not longer needed on this Raspi) and changed to console as startup application. And I did a reboot of course.

Will check and investigate with the commands from @Joulinar if it happens again. For that I installed “Uptime Kuma” on another instance to check SSH and Ping regularly.

Ok, I run in the same issue again. If I check with

dmesg -T

I get a list from early in the morning but not from the time when the issue happens (7-9). I will deliver these as soon as I have access again. journalctl was not conspicuous. Some entries from my InfluxDB in the Docker environment.

When I try to connect with SSH, I get the following:

That’s all, it’s stuck.

I have that on 2 instances with the same behavior, RPi4 and Thinkcentre.

Without a log from the system, it is almost impossible to troubleshoot the whole thing.

Fully ack @Joulinar !

This morning I was not able to get any log because of not be able to login via ssh. After a while and a lot of tries login was positive. Here a log from dmesg -T:

The post was to long.

With a htop I have seen that one of the docker containers “telegraf” run with high cpu. Therefore I tried to stop the docker service with a bad result (this few lines took longer then 2-3 min):

root@DietPi:/home/dietpi# systemctl stop docker
Failed to stop docker.service: Der Socket ist nicht verbunden
See system logs and 'systemctl status docker.service' for details.
root@DietPi:/home/dietpi# systemctl status docker.service
Failed to get properties: Der Socket ist nicht verbunden

Next step was to just stop the container stack with “telegraf” inside and now the reaction from the dietpi system is as fast as expected again. I’m wondering that dockerd is consuming so much cpu. But as long as the reaction of the system is fast again…

ps -eo pid,ppid,cmd,%cpu,%mem --sort=-%cpu | head

I guess and hope that this docker container is the reason for the slow reaction. If it helps I could post a journalctl output. In this case any advice with a parameter to reduce the log to the important lines?

You are running out of memory and applications getting killed. There is to much stuff running on your system. You can check free -m or htop. Maybe you would need to add SWAP space. But this is slowing down your system as well as it needs to write fast memory into slow disks.

free -m
gesamt benutzt frei gemns. Puffer/Cache verfügbar
Speicher: 3793 181 1859 81 1752 3481
Swap: 0 0 0

Ok, it’s a small Raspi with 4GB and it’s planned to switch all Docker container to the ThinkCentre.

And the less memory is the reason for the slow system? I ask because it happens not every day and if then not the whole day.

I’m getting similar dmesg-output on my ThinkCentre. Currently with 8GB (another 8GB bar is defect and a new one to expensive atm :-))

This can build up over time if containers or other apps slowly eat up the memory. You would just have to monitor how memory usage behaves over time.

Just try the following command to find out which process is using the most memory.

ps -eo pid,comm,rss --sort=-rss | awk 'NR==1 {printf "%-8s %-20s %-10s\n", $1, $2, "RSS_MB"} NR>1 {printf "%-8s %-20s %-10.2f\n", $1, $2, $3/1024}' | head -n 20

Since I have shutdown the telegraf/influx/grafana container the memory consumption looks good and if I run your command all looks normal to me:

root@DietPi:/home/dietpi# ps -eo pid,comm,rss --sort=-rss | awk 'NR==1 {printf "%-8s %-20s %-10s\n", $1, $2, "RSS_MB"} NR>1 {printf "%-8s %-20s %-10.2f\n", $1, $2, $3/1024}' | head -n 20

I will move this container stack to the bigger hardware and monitor the memory consumption over the next days.

Thanks @Joulinar for your support and help.

btw why do you need this in a container? Can easily run as native apps installed via dietpi-software.

Why? I’m a docker container fan and like to have the base setup (dietpi) clean without any additional services.
