I just installed Folding@home on a Raspi 4 I’m using for just a couple of other apps. I decided to stand up another Raspi 4 I had collecting dust, because I think Folding@home is pretty cool. An easy way to help out with something incredibly important.
I noticed while looking into the app that a new version, 8.5, is available. Is there an upgrade path currently on DietPi or, are there any plans to update it as part of the built in apps?. It does appear to have some nice new features.
Just thought I would ask. I could always flash a headless image of Trixie and just install the new version but, I like how lightweight DietPi is.
Cheers,
Digging DietPi. Well done!

There are some breaking changes between v7 and v8. We will need to have a look and adjust our scripts accordingly.
I never found time to fully test v8 and derive the needed changes to our implementation: DietPi-Software | Folding@Home: Migrate to v8 · Issue #7244 · MichaIng/DietPi · GitHub
It does not provide a local web UI anymore, but requires registration and login at a remote Folding@Home UI, IIRC. Needs testing whether:
- We can convert the DietPi user and team used with v7 to the new v8 system.
- That can be used like before as default for users, to skip the strict need for an own registration, without gaining some sort of admin access for this account. With v7, user and teams could be used to contribute as user and to teams, but nothing else. There was no way to e.g. remove a user or a group, rename it, or any such, no identifying/communication data. One could only create a new user to contribute as, or contribute to a different or new team. Simple, zero risks, perfect as low hurdle/efforts starting point, and a shared “DietPi” user and team to keep or switch as wanted.
If v8 enforces registration as user with credentials, email etc, which logically cannot be shared, then this IMO is a regression. And as long as v8 does not have any benefits regarding the actual local “folding” capabilities and efficiency, I’d probably then keep using v7 for as long as it is possible.
