Cannot login to newly created Dietpi on RPI 4B

I have just burned a Dietpi image (using Rufus) to a Micro SD card. I made NO changes to “dietpi.txt”. I then connect using Putty. I get the prompt to “login as” and I enter root, I then get prompted for the password and I enter dietpi, I then get a message that says Access denied.

I have tried the Trixie image and also the Bookworm image from DietPi. I encounter the same on both. I have tried using a different Micro SD, no change. I actually have 2 RPI 4B (4GB) and I’ve tried the Micro SD card in both, no change.

What else can I do?

Well that’s not easy as all my monitors are older (Displayport, DVI or VGA) and I have not been able to find a Micro HDMI to Displayport cable or adapter - they all seem to go the other way (Displayport to HDMI). Plus they are all $25 or more. I think I’ll just try RPI Lite OS.

Did you tried setting own password in dietpi.txt already. Just to check this.

No I didn’t do anything with dietpi.txt. Instead I installed RPI OS Lite and it worked fine.
