Please tell me your recommendation for the ultimate specific components with the manufacturer/model (including links on where to buy them if you can please). Most likely this is your own personal home Pi 5 that you like the best.
I was also thinking about buying a RPi 5 (or an OPi 4 Pro, but OS supports is too bad right now. It uses an Allwinner A733, the vendor image is on kernel 5.15 and no Armbian image in sight…)
and I would like run the system from NVME, so I came up with this list:
Or if you don’t like this case, there is also the Argon Neo 5 with integrated M.2 slot, but it blocks the GPIO. You could fiddle some cable through the ventilation holes, but IDK, it seems easier on the P579.
But it’s worth checking out Geekworm anyways, they have a lot of hats (e.g. PoE, PCIe to SATA, USB hubs, CSI to full-size-HDMI in- and output and also matching cases for each of these hats!)
I also thought about a CM5 with some nice IO Board, but it’s cheaper just to get the regular RPi 5 with hats/tops.
As @urostor put it - no such thing as “best”, it’s all use-case oriented.
That being said, OrangePi guys seem to have the closest to general-purpose hardware at the moment in their “5” series: RK3588 ARMv8 CPU 4x2.2Ghz + 4x1.8Ghz cores, LPDDR5 up to 16GB, 2.5GbE port(s), NVME 2280 Gen3 up to 4TB, 6TOPS 3-core NPU… But wifi support is for now unintentionally mutually exclusive with NPU, at least in the latest vendor kernel - 6.1.115, or the edge mainline 6.18.0 - no wifi there…
Geekworm cases are indeed the best for those…
Had a few more links to add for the cooler, cr2032 battery and if you’d like a mini UPS solution suitable for the setup (6A output UPS & buck convertor items), but the limit on links in new user posts hit me. Reply here if anyone needs those…
do send the links you mentioned for a complete setup including an easily portable lightweight UPS and battery - ideally everything lightweight so I can take it travelling with a portable monitor, keyboard, mouse, webcam, and headset/mic.
So you are looking for a laptop?
What about some cheap laptop with Intel N150 CPU? CPU performance is better then on a RPi 5 and you have mouse, keynoard, camera adn display included. Starting at around 300€.
And you can install whatever OS you like, also DietPi.
nope Jappe, any laptop will work instead of a Pi and they are readily available so no need to post a question, wanted to do this with a R Pi 5 as per my first post
Basically yes.
If you don’t plan on adding storage - you may only need some power cables, however, if you need to add an NVME drive - they (OPi) don’t pack the nvme drive header bolt, so you’d need that even if you get a new drive later - those arrive packaged w/o any screws. The cable that’s needed is for feeding power from the buck’s splitter back into the Pi’s USB-C power port. If you’ll need to use wifi extensively - could be a good idea to get the case with the antenna option.
P.S. If you plan on ordering any of those soon - I’d recommend waiting for some regional holiday discounts, those sometimes can be very significant…
