I am not sure if this is bug or hardware issue on PCs. I installed diepi (Native PC x86-64) on two similar PCs. I like the features and slim size of dietpi OS, compared to other linux OSes. The installation is fine and I am using the lxde graphical desktop. However there is no sound.
I followed all the help available on web to set dietpi-config → audio options /boombox settings. But it doesn’t work. If I removed all audio features, and use the automatic detection and installation of drivers, the sound works on vlc player. The sound on vlc however either worked or not worked on different days, not sure what is causing it to work or not work. But I never got sound from any video/audio playing on browser. There are no error messages, but sound is simply not there.
I tried to follow some online help, by using commands like “aplay -l”, reinstalling alsa-utils, but unable to get sound.
I appreciate any help to troubleshoot and get sound.

The lsusb command looks like I would expect.
Did you remove parts of the lspci output? If not, it doesn’t look like it should. If you did, it is probably ok.
Your computer has four audio ‘adapters’, that can/will cause you headaches, the system could use the wrong one which may not have speakers connected.
Did you install it as a VM? I know you said native but there is QEMU hardware present.
When you are trying to play something in VLC and it is silent (this is from memory) open the Audio menu and then Devices, see what is in the list and try the other options.
Yes I removed the other parts in lspci ouput. I can send the whole file if needed.
This is not a VM installation. I have virtualbox installed but it doesn’t have anything in it yet. Probably that is the reason for QEMU ?
vlc now shows the following: I tried other audio devices, but it is giving Device or resource busy.
Try launching VLC as root.
Otherwise, do you have the history saved of everything you’ve done to try and fix it?
vlc is not running as root.
Regarding history, do you mean dmesg or syslog ? I haven’t kept other records of history.
I just ran dietpi-config again. I disabled and reinstalled audio. I attached log.

Indeed 3 pop up in lsusb/lspci (I do not see a 4th?): The AMD ones will be for HDMI audio, and the Intel one for 3.5mm jack. They should also show up in dietpi-config audio options. The one selected there will be set as default audio device, used by most software by default. But good players allow to select other audio devices explicitly, like you tried in VLC.
Indeed permissions might be needed for that. Try to add your user to the audio group:
sudo usermod -aG audio "$USER"
In other cases, if software uses the “default” ALSA device: There is an auto-conversion option in dietpi-config for ALSA to automatically convert audio streams (channels, sampling rate etc) to the closest one supported by the output device.
The particular error in VLC however indicates that something else is using the audio device already. ALSA device usage is blocking by default. Try to use only one player at a time. But there is also an ALSA plugin “dmix” to allow concurrent usage/mix streams. To test:

This is for card 0 device 0. Adjust depending on which actual audio device you are using. Or combined with the “plug” plugin (auto-conversion):

Just not sure whether the “plug” PCM blocks multi-usage in this case?

I am sorry for late reply, as I couldn’t get to work on this earlier.
I tried the two suggestions above, of changing the /etc/asound.conf. It did not work. I tried changing volumes in alsamixer, but it did not work. I left it there, as I wanted to work on the settings a bit more when I get time. I had to restart the system once. I had the first mentioned configuration of /etc/asound.conf then.

Suddently when I played a video the sound was working!
So the above configuration (1st one) is actually the solution. I used the same configuration on the other PC. After a restart the sound is working!
Thanks for the solution. If you could briefly explain why it did not work, and why it works now, with the above configuration, it will be of great help to understand some basics.

Okay, great that it helped.
Might be still interesting to find out what else is accessing the audio device. Obviously this other player/process is not actually sending a (sufficiently loud) audio stream, but keeping the device locked (unless dmix plugin used). Some jukebox/remote control player might do this even if no client/remote is actually connected, but some also have a feature to free the audio device after no stream has been received for X seconds, or similar. Or it is just the desktop environment for playing some GUI sounds. This should be able to fine out:
