Having two network adapters on the same subnet active, leads to breaking network connections since the system doesn't know with adapter to send requests to (default route). In such case a routing table is required. So either add a different IP to one adapter (of course it cannot connect to the same network then) or disable one before enable the other one.

The 17 minutes most likely is one of the DHCP lease timeouts. E.g. DHCP lease for WiFi is done, which applies default route to WiFi, then DHCP lease for Ethernet times out, new lease overrides previous default route, breaking WiFi connection.

I guess Ethernet was connected temporary only and got removed before system stuck over night

Hmm, btw I think you misinterpreted the logs:
Feb 5 14:17:43 garden systemd[1]: systemd-fsckd.service: Succeeded.
Feb 5 16:52:50 garden systemd-timesyncd[452]: Synchronized to time server for the first time 37.187.104.44:123 (2.debian.pool.ntp.org).
This does not mean that the system rebooted at 14:17. The timestamp switch is due to time sync being done.

RPi shutdown => fake-hwclock safes current system time to temp file => boot => fake-hwclock restores system time from temp file, which of course is in the past => systemd-timesyncd finishes and updates system time to actual current time => timestamps show a jump in logs.

EDIT: Ah sorry, got it wrong as well, indeed somewhere after 14:3X a reboot seems to have happened, with 14:17 stored as last timestamp...

I think this is what we need to investigate:

Found some related bug report where it turns out to be an incompatibility between current wpa_supplicant and certain WiFi adapters: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1703745

Could you please paste: lsusb (it is a dongle, right?)
And if you have, could you try a different WiFi dongle/adapter?

but I dont think the real issue is in there anymore.
As I pointed out, yesterday I disabled node-red on first (initial, headless) device. And it's still working fine.
on second testing pi (with edimax) i do have node-red and same flows enabled and it already failed once.

I was trying to remember if it started after upgrade to 6.28 or if I was installing node-red at same time and it might be around same time so I maybe wrongly assumed it's caused by upgrade (but it can be).
What is actually puzzling me is that hourly cron, which only runs at 17th minute triggering ath reboot as we can see in first machine's debug.

well at least you are the only we are are who has such issues. so it might be something special on your devices, ether software, configuration or hardware 8) Or combination of everything :x

one stupid question regarding fake-hwclock. Why is it saving the 17th minte of a hour?? I would expect the job to be running every full hour 8) Or I'm totally blond on that one! :lol:

second one is purely generic dietpi 6.28, boot on SD, root on USB + node.js + node-red from dietpi-software
and the first is basically the same

anyway this is pretty standard

Hi,

just to avoid a misunderstanding regarding the 17th minute time stamp. As explained by @MichaIng yesterday, this is coming from the fact that fake-hwclock is saving a timestamp down to disk every hour. This timestamp is used in case of restarts to set an initial time on the device. Time will be corrected as soon as time-sync finished on reboot.

in your syslog you see this line, means time is set on reboot by fake-hwclock

furthermore you see the time jumping backwards in syslog as well due to fake-hwclock

some python script are executed at 4:27, than your system stuck.
During reboot system time was changed back to 4:17 ;)
It was corrected as soon as time-sync finished on boot.

so looks like your system get stuck somewhere after 4:27 and just became available again after your power off/on at 9:04.

same you can see in daemon.log. There you have quite a lot of WiFi issues as well starting 4:10 before it stopped at 4:25

so we need to find out why you have this
