NanoPi NEO Core boots from eMMC instead of SD Card

Post by abulafi »

I have flashed DietPi NanoPi Neo image 'DietPi_v6.14_NanoPiNEO-ARMv7-Stretch.img' to a SD Card and installed it to my NanoPi NEO Core (which has 512MB RAM and 8GB eMMC) assuming both SBC's are identical.

It seems like the board is not looking for the SD Card when booting and instead goes directly to the eMMC, do some initialization and then keep rebooting. I am not an expert but it looks like the eMMC had been previously flashed with some image which is a bit strange sine it is a new board.

Here is the output on the serial terminal:

I am not interested at the moment in booting from eMMC and instead would like to make it boot normally from SD Card.
Appreciate your help!

Re: NanoPi NEO Core boots from eMMC instead of SD Card

Post by MichaIng »

@abulafi
Why you think it's booting from eMMC?

Code: Select all

Trying to boot from MMC1
...
Scanning mmc 0:1...
Found U-Boot script /boot.scr
reading /boot.scr
For me this looks like it is booting from SDcard.

Detecting eMMC... does no mean it is booting from there.
All other logs match exactly our image:

Code: Select all

reading zImage
5547968 bytes read in 438 ms (12.1 MiB/s)
reading rootfs.cpio.gz
2845838 bytes read in 232 ms (11.7 MiB/s)
reading sun8i-h3-nanopi-neo-core.dtb
But now the question why it boot-loops.
- Last kernel log is about a JMicron USB device bein detected. Please try to detach the USB port (attached via board pins, right?) for first boot.
- On the other hand very last console output is starting version 225 which is the systemd version that is about to be initialised.

Okay not sure finally. General failure reasons to check:
- Try another power adapter with stable voltage supply, not a charging adapter, since those usually have no stable voltage.
- Try to run fsck on the SDcard from an external GNU/Linux system, perhaps there is a file system corruption. In case try to reflash.
- Assure that on first boot everything besides the serial console is detached for debugging, even Ethernet.
