OpenVPN client Help needed

Post by hungryguy »

Hi
I am very confused now that Dietpi has OpenVPN installed. All I want to do is use MY VPN providers .ovpn file and have Dietpi and OpenVPN load it from boot. Can someone please explain to me where in the dietpi files do I put the .ovpn and how do I get it to autostart. My .ovpn contains ALL the info for logging in to the VPN service so as I understand it I dont need a password.txt and cert file etc. I put the .ovpn file in the etc/openvpn directory but I dont know how to load /run it from there?

No doubt you can see I am unfamiliar with linux so basic instructions would be most welcome.

Thanks

Hi,

if I understand aright, you will need a OpenVPN CLIENT, not a OpenVPN SERVER.

DietPi offer a OpenVPN SERVER .
My .ovpn contains ALL the info for logging in to the VPN service so as I understand it I dont need a password.txt and cert file etc.
Something like this? my.vpnprovider.ovpn:

Code: Select all

client
dev tun1
proto tcp
remote 11.22.33.44 443
remote my.vpn-provider.net 443
resolv-retry infinite
nobind
persist-key
persist-tun
auth-user-pass
comp-lzo
verb 3
cipher AES-128-CBC
fast-io
pull
route-delay 2
redirect-gateway

as far as I know, OpenVPN can runs as client mode

It's up to your configuration file

https://openvpn.net/index.php/access-se ... ients.html

and you can make openVPN with client configuration file to start at boot with following command

Code: Select all

systemctl enable openvpn@<your configuration file name>

Code above is what I used for arch linux, maybe it is little different on dietpi

This is for ipvanish but you can use any .ovpn configuration file you wish.
