Research survey: Impact of Microsoft Acquisition of GitHub

Post by natnaree »

Dear contributors,

I am Natnaree Asavaseri and currently undertaking a research internship at Nara Institute of Science and Technology, Japan. As a part of my research, I am analyzing the impact of Microsoft's acquisition of GitHub.

I would like to conduct a survey to understand how developers perceive the Microsoft's acquisition of GitHub, especially from contributors of Linux distributions and BSD families. So please consider voicing your opinion by allowing us up to 5 minutes to complete our short survey.

We would like to remind you that participation in this survey is completely voluntary and your identity is hidden for anonymity. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

@natnaree
Thanks for sharing. Btw. the headings of the "effort" related charts seemed be be copy&pasted wrong ;). They still show "Do you think it would be a good idea..", even that the answers are related to the effort, that a move would/did make.

I almost cannot believe it that roughly 35% of (prior) GitHub projects already moved to another platform, very most of them indeed due to Microsoft acquisition. Haven't recognized that. But since there are not much left that for now tend to leave GitHub, the big rush seems to not happen (yet).

But at least from my point of view, this can quickly change, if Microsoft starts to implement it's "features" , cloud, data and account connection, into the platform. When Skype, oneDrive or Microsoft login/account merge appear, then I think we will see another larger move.

Good to know, that the efforts to move the platform were in most cases lower, than (still) GitHub users think :D.
