Audioquest Dragonfly Red v.1.0.6 static noise

Post by cychie »

Hi,

I am trying to use an Audioquest Dragonfly Red DAC on DietPi v.157. Audio output is static noise on both an Asus tinkerboard, and an Allo Sparky with USB Bridge.

The dragonfly works fine on an iMac and on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Roon is used for music playback. I've also connected my SMSL DAC to the same tinkerboard and allo usbbridge, and that is working fine.

I've included a sample of the noise recorded from the Dragonfly's output:
noise.wav.zip

Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue would be appreciated. Here are some diagnostic output:

Hi,

Could be a kernel specific issue with kernel <4.4. Ubuntu on x86 would be 4.9 I believe.

The only thing I can suggest is:
- Ensure latest firmware on DAC (1.06) http://www.audioquest.com/digitalupdates/
- If using the Allo GUI, try shairport-sync/MPD running under 16/24/32 bit output modes.

If problems persist, please let us know.

Notes to self, kernel commits in regards to Dragonfly:

Thanks for the response.

I must admit I was hoping this wasn't the issue, as I know it would take a while to fix as dietpi is on 3.10 kernel atm.

I did ensure the Audioquest Dragonfly is on 1.06, and I did try shairport-sync and even playing a WAV file with aplay, but unfortunately the result is the same.

For completeness it is worth mentioning that I also tried various power combinations for the USBBridge+Sparky board to ensure I don't have a power problem, and settled on powering the sparky and usbbridge separately(With J28 open), 2A into the usb on the sparky, and 3A to DC barrel jack on the USBBridge.

Just a further note, I am having the same issue with the dragonfly red on an Asus Tinkerboard with dietpi running kernel: Linux tinkerboard 4.4.71+ #1 SMP

Quick Update:

I upgraded the Asus tinkerboard, and the Allo usbridge to v.158.

The tinkerboard with the Dragonfly Red still has a lot of noise, but you can actually make out some music now...it is still unusable, but at least it is an improvement.

On the Allo Usbridge, things are worse...even though it sees the Dragonfly(aplay -l), roon can no longer play anything through it(it just jumps to the next song). When I rescan for devices via Roon, the usbridge starts spinning its wheels and locks up, and never completes the scan. Even when issuing a reboot command as root, it does not reboot and needs a power cycle.

The folks from allo.com fixed the issues with the Dragonfly Red on the USBridge :D :D :D

If anyone needs the steps let me know.
