Fixing after dietpi-config "dropping connections please wait" dietpi

I tried to change the DNS in dietpi-config on my RaspberryPi4 which I run headless over ethernet. I selected the new DNS and went to apply it, but it started hanging on:

"dropping connections please wait"

For more than 10 minutes. I powered it down but it won't boot back up and I can't SSH into it.

Is there something I should check or edit on the SD card to get it working again?

many thanks for your report. Unfortunately as we don't know what happen on your system, it would be goof if you could attach a screen to check for error messages (if available).

Yes, as I run it headless it's a little difficult to get a screenshot.

I restored to a backup, but it's a bit older and is missing some work, mostly just torrent files on qtorrent and a cron file.

I apologize if this is obvious, but where in the file structure are settings related to network configuration found?

Ah looks good, looks like it got set to a static IP. I'll fix that and see what happens.

yap looks like wrong network config if it switched to static. i guess you are using different subnet
probably switching to dhcp will fix it.

Ok I'm dumb. I have the files from the main partition on my Windows laptop, as well as a .img of that partition. What's the easiest way to edit that config file in ext4 and then get it on the pi that's running a much older backup?

FTP the files over to an attached hard drive on the RPi, edit the network file then dietpi-backup from that to restore the system?
