OverlayFS to protect SD card from write access

Post by 74cmonty » Thu May 23, 2019 8:35 am

Hi,
what do you think about OverlayFS to protect SD card from constantly writing?

Here is a solution for ArchLinux ARM.

@74cmonty
Many thanks for your request. Indeed veeery interesting. I always found R/O to be ugly because several system/software tasks require write access, otherwise print errors, refuse to start or such. And to be true also DietPi itself does not work silently on R/O rootfs.

So this is a fantastic solution, especially nice that it is explicitly tested and documented for RPi, which by fast most of our users have.

Are you aware of some function to sync the overlayfs changes to the underlying roofs? This would be my wet dream: Having no constant writes on the SDcard, but allowing settings changes and such to be boot persistent by syncing those back to disk before reboot. Since most regular writes are done to the same files again and again, the overall SDcard writes would still be significantly lower.

I'm not a developer and can hardly contribute to this task.
However searching the internet returns many setup guides, and this one looks interesting.
