Unable to setup / boot

I have a rpi3 that i am trying to get using diet pi ( again lol ). I found a microsd card to use, its a 64gig card. So i downloaded the image for raspberry pi boards and wrote the image to my micro sd card.
The first boot seemed fine, it then rebooted and after the reboot it went into kernel panic and i could not get it to do anything. My pi is set up with usb boot enabled, but from what i understand i should still be able to boot from microsd.
I thought it was just a fluke, so i wiped my microsd card and burned the image again. Same results.
I thought maybe it was because of the size of the card and fat / extfat issues, so i partitioned a 2gig part of the card and wrote the image to that with it set to fat32, the issue persists. I am not sure what is going on at this point other than I can always boot once then on reboot it goes into kernel panic.

Have you tried another SD card?

That i have not tried. This was the only card i could find around the house.

I’d also question the power supply aswell, usually the cause of this. Is it official RPi PSU 5V/2A+ ?

That was my problem…I thought the cell phone charger would handle it, nope…had to use an actual power supply…once it got good power it booted right up
