Seems like something is broken completely. 😞  
Even on rpi os I get the same thing no matter what.

SPI ON  
I2C ON  
------\> chip id invalid  
SPI OFF  
I2C OFF  
-------\> chip id invalid  
SPI OFF  
I2C ON  
-------\> chip id invalid  
SPI ON  
I2C OFF  
-------\> chip id invalid
