Move /home to external drive

Hello dear forum members,

Kindly excuse me as I do not have enough knowledge in Linux.

I am planning to install DietPi to NanoPi R5C’s internal eMMC which I believe is ideal. I am wondering if it’s possible to move the /home directory to an external drive like micro SD perhaps? Is there a proper way to do this in DietPi or the steps in this link are fine?

Basically, I am hoping to have all my media (movies, downloaded files from Transmission etc.) to a separate and bigger drive than the internal eMMC.

Thank you so much in advance.

Usually there should be no need to move /home directory. Especially not to a SD card. If you install Transmission from our software catalogue, downloads should go into /mnt/dietpi_userdata/downloads/ by default. And /mnt/dietpi_userdata/ can be moved to external storage using our drive manager.

There is a way to move the entire / (root drive) to a new drive which contains the /home

Boot from the fat32 /boot SD card/partition, then have the / (root drive) on the other drive (HDD/USB/SSD)
Is that what you are asking?

This would require RootFS and BootFS being located on different partition, which is not the case for all SBC. It’s an option on RPI device.
