Hi,
I just got an Odroid C5 and I was wondering if there is a version of DietPi for it. Or could I use build that is made for another machine? The processor appears to be an Amlogic S905X5M.
(If none exist that could be used, I would be willing to try and compile a version of it using the seemingly only distribution I can find for it: Ubuntu 22.04 but that culd take a long, long time. 😉

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

DietPi is based on Debian, therefore you would need a Debian base image to start.

I’ll ask Hardkernel for a developer sample 🤞.

Would it help if I figured out a way to get you access to mine via SSH?

Nah, I need to test potentially a large number of bootloader and kernel builds. No way around having a local device.

Dear @MichaIng,

If there’s still no progress on this matter, I’d be happy to purchase an Odroid C5 along with any accessories you might need. I’ll ensure the delivery goes to an address of your choice and cover all the costs. It’s the least I can do to support this fantastic project.

Please let me know the instructions. You can reach me via email, XMPP, or my cellular phone.

Thanks. At the moment I have 6 SBCs here waiting for implementation, but this week will be most likely busy polishing Debian Trixie support. So bigger issue is personal time vs task priority at the moment. Keep an eye on Armbian support. If they add it, we can add it easily as well. Until then, I’d need to plan at least a full day working time to have a chance, scheduled after I manage to find about the same time for each of the other 6 SBCs waiting on my desk.

IMHO, alternative linux distro needed for C5 as the Ubuntu variant does nothing for me!

Never liked that Gnome and GTK was hijacked and I only like the “Mate” desktop these days. 😉

They have made a Debian Bookworm image for the C5. It can be found here:

Thank you. I will give it a try. The first time I looked I missed the Debian links near the top.

Thank you for this.

What part of the OS should be offloaded to ram or a secondard SSD to prevent a exzessive writes on the eMMC anyway? Is it just the `/var` folder with the logs? In that case wouldn’t a tool like Logs2RAM be sufficient to not need a dedicated image?

Just saying here, that you can use the Debian Bookworm image from Odroid and transform that into DietPi with the official DietPi script, works pretty well so far
Debian Trixie is also support ALTHOUGH the dev from hardkernel doesn’t make it official and in rare cases, it bugs out, which happened to me only in 1:100 cases so I’d assume it’s fine 🙂

Just before you play around, create your own DietPi Odroid C5 Image for restore so you don’t have to do all the steps before again 😉

Good to know. I have a C5 already here, wired with UART and an eMMC module + all sources from Hardkernel bookmarked to implement it into our Armbian fork:

- Kernel: [GitHub - hardkernel/linux at odroids7d-6.12.y · GitHub](https://github.com/hardkernel/linux/tree/odroids7d-6.12.y)
- Config: [linux/arch/arm64/configs/odroidc5\_defconfig at 9ea2aa831a585955dcb0e38a0bc3c63d2c690adc · hardkernel/linux · GitHub](https://github.com/hardkernel/linux/blob/9ea2aa831a585955dcb0e38a0bc3c63d2c690adc/arch/arm64/configs/odroidc5_defconfig)
- U-Boot: [GitHub - hardkernel/u-boot at odroidc5-v2023.01 · GitHub](https://github.com/hardkernel/u-boot/tree/odroidc5-v2023.01)
Though these are no actual sources, just a shell with submodules which are not hosted on GitHub. Instead this yocto repo hosted on their own Git should do: [git.odroid Code Review - yocto/uboot.git/summary](https://git.odroid.com/gitweb?p=yocto/uboot.git)
- Someone from the Armbian community made a start: [build/config/sources/families/meson-s7d.conf at c8a93ce28f633f92e38f25455ca57eeda7cf8a35 · tparys/build · GitHub](https://github.com/tparys/build/blob/c8a93ce28f633f92e38f25455ca57eeda7cf8a35/config/sources/families/meson-s7d.conf)
Kernel and U-Boot branches need to be updated, but otherwise this should do.

But will finish [dietpi-network: new tool for multi interface configuration by Copilot · Pull Request #8251 · MichaIng/DietPi · GitHub](https://github.com/MichaIng/DietPi/pull/8251) before starting with the C5.

@MichaIng

Likewise
Happy to chip in for you to get your hands on one of these Odroid C5 boards.

ha Ha… I’m too late to offer

I’ll buy one to play with, as the destination for this only really needs a vanilla OS and JDM

BUT\>.. I’m keen to migrate the everyday kit to the C5
