Hi I have an Odroid XU4 system running Dietpi, I use for NAS, with a RAID and also for my personal PLEX, and Transsmission.
The problem is after some elctricity supply cut outs on my home, when I restarted my system the HDD where I had PLEX was mounted as Only Read System.
I tryed to sort out the problem with e2fsck and was able to remount it properly, but I have lost data, and also, the receovered data was in lost & found folder, with strange subfolders.
Nothing to be worried about cause this HDD it is connected to my Odroid XU4 through an SATA to USB 3.0 adapter, and I can recover the data from other sources, but this is the second time an unproperly shutdown of the system causes me this trouble on my HDD.
The HDD is brand new, and this also happend to me in another HDD which actually is properly working in another machine.
I would like to find why the system is affecting the superblock on my HDD after this event, and how to recover it without loosing data.

do you have your external HDD powered by an own PSU? Or is it powered by the Odroid USB port?
In general loosing power could lead to issues on HDD if something is written down and in process of writing files power is cut. Maybe you need to think of a Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) to avoid such issues and if you expecting more power cuts.
I forgot to mention my system has a Cloudshell, and the HDD with the problems is plugged directly into de cloudshell, so the power comes from the Odroid…
Another information.
I formated and deleted everything in my HDD, restarted Transmission and started working as usual.
This evening without any electrical supply cut, the HDD appears as Read Only System.
So I am no totally lost.
Please I need help.
Each some time the HDD goes back to Read Only system and Transmission stop working…

you should not operate the HDD without dedicated PSU. It’s highly recommended to have the HDD self powered and not just by the SBC. Otherwise you could run into voltage issues leading to data corruption. The result is a read only file system as the system tries to avoid further issues on the disk.
You could have a look to kernel error messages if there is something about voltage

My workaround didn’t help.
I set the CPU in a low frequency, getting a lower temperature.
But the Kernel, for whatever reason keep on finding errors while trying to write on this HDD and that’s why is getting to Read Only, to avoid more problems.
I don’t have a clue why this happens.
I need help, I may show here any log requested…

Did this work reliably before? As you said the HDD is new, probably it consumes more power, at least during I/O peaks
Generally it isn’t recommended to power a 2.5" (or greater) drive via an SBCs USB only, but indeed the CloudShell cases are explicitly designed for this. Could be that the Odroid XU4 generally has a higher and more stable USB power. Is it this CloudShell case?

You are right the cloudshell is the one of your link.
The power adapter I use is the one recommended by hardkernel, actually I boiught it from theri web, and it has 5V 6.0A supply. So it should be enough for feeding the Odroid board and a HDD connected to the Cloudshell, I will also try to unplug the small LCD, just to be sure the power is enough.
I will clean all contacts carefully to see if that helps, and I am going to buy another fan to keep temperatures under control, I will post my result here.

After cleaning all contacts, the board, with alcohol, the HDD goes Read Only mode in less than 5 minutes if I start Transmission.
This is anoying…
The HDD has 5v 1A consumption, by the way, the same as the previous HDD I did have plugged in…
I am reinstalling everything from zero…

you should really think of to use a dedicated PSU for the HDD. Just to exclude the Cloudshell
5V 1A would be e.g. the limit and practically often above on RPi, and often these numbers do not cover peaks when powering on the drive or on heavy access. Similar to CPU TDP values, these do not always represent the maximum. And the actual maximum may vary from HDD to HDD. But with a dedicated PSU, the CloudShell could not be used anymore as intended, which is bad. But yes, if possible, it could at least help to verify that HDD power draw on USB is really the issue.

So 2A shared on both USB3.0 ports, which is significantly more than on RPi and as long as only one of these ports is used, shouldn’t have any issues to power a 2.5" drive. Can you check which revision you use? Should be shown in cat /proc/cpuinfo.
The USB2.0 port serves only 500mA, so that is more intended for attaching input devices, a USB WiFi adapter or such things, where the USB3.0 speed and power would be wasted.
Btw, temperature was the other idea you head. Could you stop Transmission and instead do a stress test? It shows the temperature as well while running: dietpi-config > Tools > Stress
5V 1A would be e.g. the limit and practically often above on RPi, and often these numbers do not cover peaks when powering on the drive or on heavy access. Similar to CPU TDP values, these do not always represent the maximum. And the actual maximum may vary from HDD to HDD. But with a dedicated PSU, the CloudShell could not be used anymore as intended, which is bad. But yes, if possible, it could at least help to verify that HDD power draw on USB is really the issue.

I will do the stress test, but the temperature must be discarded, because I did set the cpu frquency to a low level, so the temperature was quite low, like 54ºC or similar, and even with this change, after 5 minutes using Transmission, the system changed the HDD to read only.
I tend to believe the problem comes from the power supply.
Nevertheless the eMMC was corrupted for so many rebootings, and I had to reinstall everything.
Now it is working fine, and the HDD is still connected to the USB3.0 port of the cloudshell.
I will try to save power, like disconnecting the LCD of the cloudshell, and not using the other usb3.0 port (which I never used anyway).
I will post later my stress test just in case it could be usefull to anyone with the same hardware.

I did the stress test, but it only show the temperatures…
…started in 60ºC ended in 88ºC (I did 5 minutes test using RAM, CPU & HDD).
By now everything goes fine on my set up.

88 °C is indeed very high. If that is in a housing without air flow together with the HDDs I guess this could cause issues, though the CloudShell has quite many vents.
It looks like your Odroid is actually an XU3
.
. Probably it uses the current working directory, which would be a tmpfs (RAM disk), lol.
. I checked back whether I can find USB power info about it, but I didn’t. Probably it was indeed a software-wise issue. Pressing thumbs it remains stable now
