I was wanting a CHIP before the Pine was announced.
The biggest problems I have are
- it’s been promised for about a year
- It’s not really $9 when you factor in the video adapters cost more than the computer… $10 VGA & $15 HDMI… That makes the $9 CHIP a $24 Pi A+
(don’t get me wrong, though… I’ll still buy one if they ever start shipping. ROFL )
C.H.I.P is still worth it at $9 + shipping. Not worth if you are going to use it with the Monitor etc. Headless Server is a great application.
Gives RPi-0 a run for its money.
Yes the shipping takes away the fun from the costing, which is the case with most of the KickStarter project.
With a fixed Memory (NAND-FLASH) on the Hardware, Diet-Pi seems like a must… that’s my personal opinion.
yeah… My co-worker got in on the kickstarter and brought his in to the office a while back. I’ve changed my opinion on the C.H.I.P.
I’ll probably order one from their next production run.
Wish I was living in America
- $9 = chip
- $6.22= shipping
- £8 = HMRC tax
- £8 = “handling fee”
Rob: Would you be up for doing the DietPi image on the C.H.I.P if you get one?
absolutely! It’ll be a week or 2 before I can order it, though. We had a plumbing emergency in the house over the weekend… The repairs to the house and bank account need to happen first.
(at least that’s what my wife keeps telling me)
Excellent !

Gutted, hopefully not too much damage to appliances?
Our washing machine packed in the other day, all digs into the bank
Although the good news, it handles 8KG load, yay!

Lmao
Tell her the CHIP can be used to detect water in the house
Well - I’ve got 2 x Pine 64+ (2GB + wifi/bt)…
I’ve got 5 CHIPs (one’s a PocketCHIP), and another 4 on the way…
The whole “CHIP” ecosystem is light years ahead of Pine… Pine are still mesolithic… I didn’t really buy them for a desktop experience - they’re for discreet “headless” tasks mostly… was hoping to use a Pine with a Motorola Lapdock as a “desktop experience”.
Anyway - got DietPI on one of them now (other one’s running Armbian “headless”).
Few teething issues with DietPI on this “pizzo di merda” (that is, literally, its hostname) - but it’s HEAPs better than the Debian build pointed to by their forum… I’ll find a more appropriate thread to post my questions…
I commented on the Pine64 forum it was a shame that DietPI didn’t have XFCE as an option - and NOW IT DOES!
What other SBCs have I got? I’ve got an original plain-jane BananaPI… I’ve got an Orange PI Plus 2E on the way…
As far as stability and software goes, CHIP and Banana run rings around the Pine…
