ERROR: Couldn't determine iptables version

@MichaIng it rebooted properly this time… Only thing that didn’t work as expected was the oled screen it has dint turn on so I probs messed something up is startup.sh but other than that it’s connects with SSH. Why has it randomly started working?

This is no valid shell syntax but a cron job entry. If you do not need it (seems to be about a Python script to update some DNS entry?), remove or comment it.

Furthermore, the ongoing choosing fan reg 0x7 log spam indicates that /root/fan/fan.py runs as ongoing process, so /root/fan/screen.py is never called. This matches your observation that the OLED screen doesn’t work. Those two scripts need to be called via separate services. I suggest something like that:

The startup.sh is broken in two ways, regarding vcgencmd (I posted the command above to assure the package is installed) and a syntax error as well. Should be reported to the developer of this script. Doesn’t this script actually double with the fan.py, or what different purposes do both have?

The journal is what catches and stores the system logs, so after it is stopped, there are no more system logs possible. More can only be seen via serial console.

What do you mean by “Nvm”? Which log entry?

It is btw normal that logs from before reboot and after reboot are mixed: Until the network time sync is done, the system knows only the last stored timestamp from when the fake-hwclock.service was stopped, so at least for one second there is an overlap and you can only differentiate by the -- Boot entries which show which logs belong to which boot session. Luckily with Debian Bookworm, this is better, and logs are grouped by boot session blocks.

Okay so the cron job entry is needed as that updates my domain via a custom script that deletes the old record on godaddy.com and makes a new one every I think 5 mins? or however long that cron job is. For the fan problem, I have a yahboom fan hat and it has LED and a screen and other rubbish I thought would be useful years ago, this is the only Python script that I’ve managed to find online and edit parts of that actually runs. It’s supposed to check temp and change speeds depending on temp, so if it’s above 40 it will run at full speed, 0x7 means it’s running at low speed, The service programs he provided don’t work and I didn’t really ever fix that problem because the auto start script always worked, both eh fan and the OLED screen turned on at the same time, the screen updated the fan went to a higher speed and changed colour, (i think it goes like red or green when it’s above 38 couldn’t figure out how to change), so that is a new problem. I don’t know what vcgencmd is and I dunno bout the syntax error but the guy is Chinese and his repo is deleted along with his account. When it said nvm it doesn’t work now I should have been specific, I meant that when I rebooted the first time, it shut down and turned on, the keyboard lights were on and the SSD light was flashing along with the ethernet port, but when I rebooted again it shut down, the keyboards lights turned off and on then as well as the SSD light, but the SSD light flashed once before staying off, which never happens, the only thing flashing was the ethernet ports, and what I remember was one flash every second or two. that’s all the information I can provide, if you want to see the Python scripts I can show them, but I know for a fact that the script is shite, but it does the job and I don’t really know Python in this area. The code always fails about half an hour after its run for both scripts. apologies for the lack of clarity mate.
(btw the DNS script uses GoDaddy’s API, but ChatGPT did write it and it worked, so I left it be. As most programmers say, if it works, don’t touch it)

A script cannot execute a cron job, and the script you used in particular didn’t even ever reach this line of code. If you want to add a cron job, use

crontab -e

or add a script to one if the /etc/cron.hourly /etc/cron.daily /etc/cron.weekly /etc/cron.monthly directories.

If you want to update your DDNS record, I suggest trying it with dietpi-ddns. GoDaddy is not directly supported, so you need to find out the API URL and add it as “custom” provider/URL. dietpi-ddns does all the cron job setup

It is not clear to me which of the two fan/screen scripts does what, works or does not work. The custom.sh you use, as said, does not work expectedly as of the syntax, but I provided the commands to create two services to start those two scripts cleanly on startup. I think you should remove all scripts/services and stuff you added for this purpose and re-add them one by one (using my services as alternative to the custom.sh) and see what really works. The startup.sh, as said, definitely has problems and throws errors, so I guess at least parts of it are not working and probably done by the fan.py instead.

That is an extremely bad recommendation! So many things can go wrong, open doors for hackers, make your private data or sensitive information available to the public, delete your data or break your device without knowledge. And running those scripts from some random guy on the internet which has its repo and account deleted in the meantime may well be responsible for your issues and probably for worse. Hence I think it makes sense to at least review them, cleaning things up, resolving the errors. At best you can find an alternative for controlling your fan. Isn’t the manufacturer or vendor providing a script for it? Probably someone on https://forums.raspberrypi.com/ posted a little more trustworthy solution that was discussed and proven by the community.

So being a preview and producing inaccurate information should be sufficient to not use if for production systems, at least as long as you are not able to fully understand what it produces to know when it does rubbish. That it “works” does not mean that it does things right and does not do a lot of other things you didn’t want. Also note that ChatGPT is a language model, no programming, logic or information model. It has no logic, it cannot program, it has no idea of what is true and what is wrong and no possibility to evaluate random text it finds online. It really only does grab random text it was trained with or finds somewhere which statistically matches your entered question/task and arranges it in a nicely readable way. If often works surprisingly well but it sometimes fails dramatically and it may produce subtile errors which stay unnoticed or cause issues you wouldn’t associate with it.

Go with solutions you find on trusted networks (like a StackExchange site, forums or active GitHub repos, where you can ask questions, report/discuss problems, have others who reviewed and tested it, have someone how is responsible (not legally, but you know what I mean).

However, enough of prig teaching, I’m sorry for that :smile:.

I’d go like this:

  • Remove this startup.sh (respectively move it somewhere as backup).
  • Follow the instructions to create, enable and start the two Python scripts via dedicated systemd services like I posted above. Then check whether fan speed, LED and screen do what they should and you can check the service logs via:

  • If they do not work well, disable both:
    systemctl disable --now fan screen
    apt install libraspberrypi-bin # installs vcgencmd
    
    Start startup.sh and check whether it alone does what it should. You can paste the content of the script here, as I am at least able to review/fix the shell part of it.
  • If you find the GoDaddy DDNS update API, use dietpi-ddns for this.

Sorry for the late replys, for some reason I stopped getting emails that you’ve replied. I’m going to do multiple replys for each things you’ve said, probs in order you’ve said them. Firstly and weirdly enough the start.sh did the from job… Like when it first ran the record showed up on the GoDaddy website, I deleted the record and waited for a little while and it showed up again. So that’s odd. I’m going to do the services stuff and all that and I’ll get back to you. Also sorry about chat GPT. Also also the guy on GitHub deleted it recently, he made quite a few updates, and I’ve checked fthe script itself and it worked quite well and didn’t have errors that affected me but there were errors. Also the company that makes the fan HAT did not make good code. If you look online many people complain the code doesn’t work, similar to how it did not work for me. There service did not work either. And they were of no help when I contacted them. Also they sell the HAT for like £70 last time I checked and I brought it for like 15 so bit of a weird company.

I have the API key secret key, but how would I find the URL, also if it won’t let me see the key again on the website how will the system be able to use the API to add records? The fan.py you mean? At least it does not print any error but reasonable values. Does it adjust fan speeds succeasfully based on CPU temp? You could stress it via dietpi-config > Tools > Stress.
